Total Japan auto production by month, year-on-year % change

This chart shows the year-on-year (year-over-year) change in Japan auto production. This can be a volatile series, as one can see from the wild fluctuations during and after the global financial crisis of 2008-2009. In 2011-2012, similar volatility was generated by the aftermath of the Northern Japan earthquake and the recovery a year later.

Total Japan auto production by month, year-on-year change in cumulative output year-to-date

This chart shows the year-on-year (year-over-change) change in year-to-date production. So, if the most recent month of production is March, and production for January to March was 1.1 million units compared to 1 million for January to March of the previous year, the year-on-year change up to March would be +10%. Obviously this figure can be volatile early in the year but tends to stabilise later.
